Give a Child a Family

Bringing families and children together

In a drive to assert itself as a company that cares, Fresenius Kabi South Africa has endeavoured to assist various organisations across the country in their aims to better the lives and improve the future of South Africa’s future generations.

To this end, is 2005 the company pledged its support to the “Give a child a family” programme; in doing so Fresenius Kabi South Africa has become an important health partner to orphans and vulnerable children.

Based in Margate KwaZulu-Natal, the vision of the programme is to make sure that “Children are in secure families". This model of excellence has attracted widespread attention due to the innovative manner in which children who have been neglected, abused, abandoned, orphaned and HIV/AIDS infected and affected, are rescued and eventually placed back with nurturing foster families in communities as an alternative to long term institutionalized care.

The children are brought to The Place of Restoration Shelter where 60 children can be accommodated at a time. Children remain at the shelter for periods of three months to two years, depending on their individual circumstances before they are placed within a new family. Approximately 120 children are cared for every year.

Therapeutic and Counselling programmes are provided to assist children to deal with trauma, grief and bereavement and include: Play Therapy, Art Therapy, Individual Counselling, Group Counselling, Anger Management, and Adolescent Development Programmes. Hero Books and Memory Work assists children in coming to grips with the loss of their biological parents and “write” a new story for there future.

Fresenius Kabi South Africa has for the past three years been the sole partner and funder of the home’s health programme for children. This facility has also been fully equipped through Fresenius Kabi South Africa funding.

The Health Department deals with the evident signs of abuse, malnutrition, dehydration, diarrhoea, de-worming and skin diseases on admission and all the ailments of neglect and poverty which has a devastating effect on young children. Routine healthcare - Immunisations, HIV/AIDs testing, ARV’s, Dental Care, Eye and Hearing Tests, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and all the day-to-day childhood diseases are dealt with to ensure that children are healthy and thriving before being placed in a new Family.

Thanks to the company’s commitment, dedication and support the “Give a child a family” programme has managed to thrive and continue to do the good work it does, and give hope and a future to children who might otherwise have become just another number.
